Death of Stellenbosch’s Russel Botman ‘a great loss to the country’

2014-06-28 13:13

The city of Cape Town has expressed sadness at the death of Professor Russel Botman, Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University.

“His departure is a great loss to this city and to our country,” said mayor Patricia de Lille.

“He will always be remembered for the role he played in fighting apartheid.”

De Lille said Botman had made immeasurable contributions to the higher education landscape and was committed to transformation.

Botman completed his doctorate in theology at the University of the Western Cape.

“Through his ministry, he continued to fight for social justice,” said De Lille.

Botman joined Stellenbosch University in 2000 as a professor in the department of practical theology and missiology. In 2002, he was appointed vice-rector of the university.

He was an internationally known theologian who advised the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva on several topics.
