Department delivers to 99% of schools

2011-01-06 08:02

KwaZulu-Natal’s education department has delivered textbooks and stationery to more than 99% of all schools in the province ahead of the start of the school year – an improvement from 40% in 2006.

MEC Senzo Mchunu told City Press earlier today that the department’s learner and teaching support material team had ensured delivery of essential material to school throughout the province before they closed last year.

“This would ensure that the 2011 school year begins in earnest and teaching and learning will start from day one.

Teaching and learning must begin instantaneously when schools open,’’ Mchunu said.

Delivery of textbooks and stationery had traditionally been a thorny issue, with only 40% of schools receiving materials on time in 2006.

Mchunu said that since then, there has been a steady improvement, with 80% receiving books on time in 2007, 95% in 2008, 97% in 2009 and 99% in 2010.

“We hope to reach the magical target of 100%, notwithstanding the fact that the department is challenged by the size and geographical spread of the province and the non-availability of resource materials in the market place,” Mchunu said.
