Department ‘will defend’ potential suit

2010-07-01 16:47

The Department of Education in Gauteng has received a letter of

demand related to a failed World Cup schools accommodation project.

It said in a statement: “The department has received a letter of

demand for R126 million from private company Soweto Focus Point (SFP) regarding

the use of our schools as holiday accommodation for soccer tourists. We will

defend the matter.”

This follows an earlier claim by SFP that it would take legal

action to recover purported losses of R150 million.

It claims to have shut down its project following the refusal by

the department to endorse it.

The department claims SFP only contacted it on the eve of the World

Cup to request permission for the project – after it had done its preparations

and renovations.

It referred SFP to a letter sent to schools in March, “discouraging

the practice of letting school facilities for this purpose.”

The department said: “The truth of the matter is that SFP does not

require or need permission from the department to run their project. Our only

concern has been to ensure that School Governing Bodies are aware of the

potential liabilities they could face through entering into such agreements and

we warned them accordingly.”
