Derby thriller for Capetonians

2011-02-12 07:23

Ajax Cape Town emerged victorious at the end of the best 90 minutes of football seen in the Mother City for a long time as they beat Santos 4-3.

The game had everything – a good crowd on a warm night, local passion and pride, a red card and seven goals, nearly every one out the top drawer.

Ajax went ahead in the 18th minute, Bafana striker Terror Fanteni notching his ninth goal of the season with a perfectly executed left-foot chip.

Then Ajax went down to 10 men with 35 minutes gone as Thulani Hlatshwayo showed far too much enthusiasm as he clattered into Tony Tsabedze.

This did not deter the Urban Warriors as they made it 2-0 after 41 minutes when Khama Billiat hit a curling shot into the top corner, another goal showing excellent technique.

Yet, there were still two goals to come before the break – Santos pulled one back in the 43rd minute though a Bongi Macala header, a clinical finish, before Clayton Daniels struck from close range just before the break.

The People’s Team showed improvement in attack after the restart, with Vuyisile Wana’s pace troubling Foppe de Haan’s side.

It was Wana who scored next. Another brilliant goal, similar to Billiat’s as he carefully placed the ball into the top corner from about 20-yards out after 64 minutes.

Ten minutes later, it was all square as Jurie Basie’s drive had enough power to break through Vonk’s attempted save.

The game was there for the taking as both sides gave their all in the final 15 minutes.

After several close calls at both ends, it was left to Thulani Serero to settle it in the 87th minute with a strike as sweet as they come from 25-yards, a goal worthy of winning one of the best games in many a season down in the Cape.
