Regardless of your religious beliefs, the burial process always seems quite final.

Now, thanks to some sharp minds in Italy, a burial does not have to mean the end. Instead of becoming another block in a cemetery, burial pods allow the body of a deceased person to become the starting point of a tree – turning cemeteries into rich forests.

The Capsula Mundi project aims to address the amount of space used up for cemeteries and the amount of energy used up in cremations. The burial pod system acts as a nurturing site for relatives and friends, as the tree is planted on top of the loved one’s remains. Some countries, including Italy, have reservations about the project, and have not signed the practice into law.

If you feel more at home in the sea, your remains can form part of what’s called the Neptune Memorial Reef – an underwater burial ground that uses human remains to build up a new coral reef – at once pretty to look at and environmentally friendly. The idea was hatched by the biggest cremation company in the US and has the backing of the Green Burial Council.

Proponents of both the pod and reef burial plans believe these are ecofriendly and positive options with which to attain life after death.
