We can’t wait for the new Metro Park, just south of the Nelson Mandela Bridge, to be open to the public.

The park, planned by the Johannesburg Development Agency and Johannesburg City Parks, converted what was once a dumping spot in the inner city into a green space in which residents can breathe, play, relax and gather.

The park features a playground, outdoor gym, toilet facilities, an amphitheatre, lawns and picnic tables, as well as about 200 indigenous trees.

It isn’t open to the public yet, but it’s winning accolades already. Earlier this year, the SA Landscapers Institute recognised the park as an excellent example of construction design at the annual SA Green Industries Council Convention.

Marina Landscaping, the company the development agency appointed to develop Metro Park, was honoured with a Gold Award of Excellence in the Landscape Construction with Design by Others category for outstanding design and development on the facility.

Construction on the park began in May last year and was completed five months later.

The official opening of the park will be announced soon.
