Ethiopian shoe brand Sawa has the hippest kicks this side of the prime meridian – and with Made in Africa stamped on them, they are set on driving production on the continent.

Algerian-born, Paris-based founder and designer Mehdi Slimani decided the way for Africa to develop at the same rate as the rest of the world was to drive industrial production.

“Behind our Made in Africa statement are factories, workers, their families, a school, a hospital. I really believe in industrial revolution to pull Africa forward. Historically, the Industrial Revolution triggered development in the UK, then in the US, Europe and Asia. Why should it not be the solution in Africa? Why do we need Bono and Geldof?”

The Tsague range of Sawa boots, recently featured in Vogue, use signature “hairy hide” leather with high-quality rubber soles that feature the brand’s African imprint and a luxurious leather lining.

They are made using sustainable business practices, leaving you with kicks that keep on kicking long after you take them off.
