Diamond Life: Meeting Mary J

2012-02-11 18:54

I have discovered a new talent.

Last night I was asked to interview celebrities attending the Belvedere Red Benefit concert featuring Mary J Blige on behalf of Vuzu Entertainment. The presenter, Dineo Moeketsi, had to attend Will.I.am’s benefit concert at the Palladium at the same time.

Before you know it I was standing next to camera crews and presenters from Fox and MTV. I was a little nervous because I prefer to do research before interviews, but I was not overwhelmed.

Everything was beyond professional, from the point where we picked up our accreditation to markers placed where the different media were located – which helped the publicists identify them for interviews.

My very first interview was with my music icon, Mary J Blige, who wore a shimmering gold number. Deep inside I was screaming like a proper groupie!

When she got to my spot, we shook hands and started talking about her involvement in the fight against HIV and Aids. She was gracious and answered my questions with ease and even complimented my shoes – which were killing me at that point. (After that, the pain vanished.)

A woman after my own heart!

Turns out miss MJB is a huge Adele fan – aren’t we all? – and said she was looking forward to her performance more than any other on the night of the Grammy Awards.

She wasn’t the only one rooting for Adele. Everyone, from Tamar Braxton (who sang the chorus from Someone Like You when I asked her to) to MC Lyte, kept talking about how much they want her to win.

I enjoyed chatting to P. Diddy’s baby mama, Kim Porter, who was happy that I asked about her children – sounds like nobody ever asks.

Had a girly moment with Braxton with me perving on her Versace boots and pretty Moschino belt and her asking to switch dresses since she liked mine.

Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker was also there and talked about the fun he had on the music video they made for Jamie Foxx’s Blame it on the Alcohol. By the end of the red-carpet moment, I was a little cold – it is winter after all – so I quickly went inside to start the partying in the packed-to-the-rafters venue.

It turned out to be a fantastic night and I’m glad I took it easy during the day by just walking around The Grove mall and doing lunch at the fantastic Farmer’s Market. I swear I could get used to this life ...

Today we do it again, but bigger since most celebrities are in town and everyone is hosting their own party. Let the La La Land fun continue!
