Not for me so much

Trevor Noah opened his debut with a slick reference to the ongoing protests against instutionalised racism in the US that were sparked by the death of unarmed teen Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. His angle was nothing new, but he does the important work of challenging stereotypes about deepest darkest Africa, while also pointing out the challenges that the US faced. I didn’t find the jokes particularly funny, but I do realise that I am unlikely to be his target audience. The “Africa has superhighways too” and African mum “accent” is not my cup of tea. As Africans, we’ve had those jokes, but long may Trevor school those ’Mericans. Gugulethu Mhlungu

Viva comrade Noah (bar the funny accent), Viva!

Trevor Noah’s African accent really eluded him when he took to The Daily Show.

Nevertheless, the increasingly famous SA comedian deserves the kudos he is getting, and contributing to Jon Stewart’s show is no mean feat. By highlighting African achievement and tackling Ebola hysteria, Noah neatly mocked the US and highlighted its own imperfections. And if challenging stereotypes, highlighting inequalities and telling uncomfortable truths are used as markers of comic excellence, then The Daily Show’s newest talent wins hands down, even though he may not have elicited belly laughs. – Siyabonga Sithole
