Disgraced former communications minister Dina Pule’s case was being discussed “at the highest levels in the ANC”, and she could face suspension from the party, ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte has said.

“The ANC isn’t taking the matter as casually as it might seem,” she told journalists at a breakfast briefing in Parktown, Joburg, this morning.

“We are taking it very seriously.”

Duarte said the party did not talk about its internal disciplinary processes in public because it might prejudice those being disciplined.

“Parliament said there should be a criminal investigation,” she said, adding that it was a rule for the party to suspend those who were criminally charged.

Pule was suspended by Parliament for 15 days last week, her salary was docked for a month and she had to apologise.

She was, however, comforted by many of her fellow MPs, which led to reports that some of her colleagues in the ANC felt she was too harshly dealt with.

Duarte said the ANC seemed very corrupt because it was proactive in highlighting cases of corruption among its own public representatives.

She said the ANC wouldn’t stop exposing cases of corruption and other parties should do the same.
