Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla says the fact that members of his own family have taken him to court is "a deep disappointment to my grandfather".

Mandla, who is Mandela's heir and is chief of Mvezo in the Eastern Cape, was on Friday hit with an interim order which means he may not block the reburial of remains of three of Mandela's children.

Mandla Mandela said in a statement issued this morning that he learned of the court case, in the Mthatha High Court, through the media.

He continues to insist he was not served with papers.

"Regrettably and reluctantly I am compelled to go to court and respond to the action taken against me," he said in the statement.

"The way we are handling these matters is contrary to our customs and a deep disappointment to my grandfather."

Today City Press reveals what the motivation was for the urgent application, which has divided the Mandela family while the global icon remains on life support in the Pretoria Heart Hospital.
