Disband youth agency – SA Democratic Student Movement

2011-11-04 10:40

The SA Democratic Student Movement (Sadesmo) called for the disbandment of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) today.

“The NYDA has turned into nothing but a patronage scheme for the hugely handicapped youth wing of the ruling party,” said spokesperson Wendy Dlamini in a statement.

She said the development agency only found jobs with good salaries for its own “comrades” while the rest of the South African youth remained unemployed.

Sadesmo called for the formation of a youth ministry that would focus on placing graduates in jobs and replace the NYDA. “We call on government to show progressive leadership by addressing this issue immediately.”

The IFP Youth Brigade and the Cope Youth Movement also called for the disbandment of NYDA on Wednesday.

Leaders of the two organisations said the NYDA, said to be dominated by ANC Youth League leaders, had failed to address issues affecting young people.

IFP Youth Brigade spokesperson Ntuthuko Majozi said the NYDA was nothing but an employment agency for governing party elites.

The organisation said they would call on Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to probe how the NYDA spent R106 million during a youth festival.
