African Union (AU) Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said she had no intention of resigning her current position to take up a seat in Parliament.

“I will finish my term. South Africans can say what they want. I am a member of the ANC and they can say what they want. They can make their own pronouncement, but I will finish my term,” she said in response to a question during a briefing at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, today.

Asked whether she would stand for a second term, she said she was elected for one term. “I don’t cross a bridge before I get there,” she said.

The daily Sowetan reported today that she had accepted nomination to be on the ANC’s elections lists.

According to the report, ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete was also nominated, but City Press has learnt it is unlikely that she would accept nomination.

Mbete is also attending the AU summit because she sits on the African Peer Review Mechanism committee, which met today.

The briefing at which Dlamini-Zuma was speaking was on the AU’s annual summit currently under way and ahead of the assembly by the heads of state due to take place tomorrow and Friday.

The theme for this years’ summit is agriculture.
