‘Do-gooder’ suspended for travel scam

2013-10-20 14:00

A manager responsible for dealing with whistle-blowers’ tip-offs in the Northern Cape legislature has been found guilty of making a fraudulent travel claim.

Legislature staff are now accusing Speaker Kenny Mmoiemang of interfering in Boitumelo Kola’s disciplinary hearing and ignoring the recommendation to fire her.

Mmoiemang, the ANC’s provincial deputy chairperson, has denied allegations that he is pressuring acting secretary Patrick Moopelwa to ignore the recommendations.

Kola – who was suspended pending the outcome of the investigation – is back at work. In a report on her disciplinary hearing, which was outsourced, and which City Press has seen, Kola admits to the fraud.

She admitted to claiming and being paid R3 455 for a trip to Kimberley on 24 June this year.

The hearing found that Kola travelled to Kimberley on the days in question, but when she returned, she “misled and/or was dishonest to the employer by claiming you used your vehicle” when she had actually travelled with other colleagues in one car.

Mmoiemang did not deny the charges against Kola but hit out at “unnamed sources” for leaking information about the case.

His spokesperson said: “The insinuation that Mmoiemang is putting pressure on the secretary not to dismiss Kola is not true. This is purely an administrative issue and, as stated, all decisions in this regard rest solely with the secretary.”

Moopelwa denied that there had been any pressure from Mmoiemang and said he would decide by Tuesday whether to axe Kola.
