Doctor leaves patient during surgery to smoke

2015-01-28 21:41

A surgeon at Pholosong Hospital in Tsakane, east of Johannesburg, cut open a patient during an operation and left her for 30 minutes while he disappeared to have a smoke.

City Press has reliably learnt that the surgeon, whose name is known to the newspaper, was served with a dismissal letter yesterday following a disciplinary hearing.

City Press could not immediately get comment regarding the matter from Gauteng health spokesperson Prince Hamnca.

However, it is not the first time that a surgeon at a Gauteng hospital was negligent during an operation.

In 2009, an elderly woman - who was supposed to have a hip replacement operation at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital - was cut open and immediately stitched up after the surgeon discovered that a striker drill used to cut the bone was not working.

Investigations showed that the health workers assisting the surgeon had failed to test the striker drill before cutting the elderly woman open. The woman had to be operated on again a few months later.
