Doctors rubbish health council’s drive

2012-04-16 12:57

The ongoing campaign “touting” for patients to lodge complaints against medical practitioners would bring adverse results, the South African Medical Association (Sama) has said.

Addressing journalists in Pretoria, Sama acting chairperson Dr Mark Sonderup, said the Health Professions Council of South Africa’s nationwide campaign was inappropriate.

“Their mandate is to protect the public and to drive the profession, not to tout for people to complain against doctors,” said Sonderup.

In March, the council launched an intensive media campaign urging patients to report cases of unethical conduct and other medical malpractice.

“What have they done to increase professionalism among the country’s (medical) practitioners?” asked Sonderup.

He said as a result of the scrutiny, practitioners would have to conduct unnecessary examinations which would hurt patients financially.

Sonderup refuted the council allegations which suggested that professionalism was on the decline among South African practitioners.

On another note, Sama said the lack of doctors, equipment and infrastructure would hamper the implementation of the National Health Insurance scheme.
