Double life for man who hacked two to death

2012-04-05 10:55

A man convicted of killing an elderly woman and her granddaughter in Tholeni village, Butterworth, in the Eastern Cape, has received two life sentences in the Mthatha High Court.

Mqwalaseli Mabhayi (33) yesterday received two life sentences and another 10 years for housebreaking, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

Ntombomzi Gubevu (70) and her granddaughter Nonelwa Gubevu (12) were found hacked to death in their home on February 22 2009. Mabhayi was arrested a month later.

“During the investigation, it came out that he murdered the two as they were possible witnesses to a case of rape (of which he and another man were suspected),” Manatha said.

Subsequently, the other man was arrested, convicted and sentenced to 22 years in jail. Mabhayi was cleared of the rape.

A spate of murders of women and children in the village between 2008 and 2010 led Tholeni to be dubbed “the village of death” by locals, Manatha said.

He said that while Mabhayi’s conviction would come as a relief to the community, eight of the 13 murders remained unsolved.
