Drive: Worthy of a ribbon

Citroën C3
The word pizzazz comes to mind when you lay your eyes on this one. Thanks to its decent torque of 118Nm and 54kW of power, the engine has a little more grunt.

The smelly sneakers will be masked by the built-in air freshener and the wide windscreen is almost panoramic in size. Four airbags and other standard driver assist features take care of the safety.

Fiat Panda 100HP

Cute factor aside, this car is practical and has attitude. The 100HP top-of-the-range model is fitted with a 1.4-litre engine and a six-speed manual gearbox.

It has an average fuel consumption of 6.5 litres/100km and a special suspension with 15-inch tyres.

It also comes with four airbags, a leather steering wheel, split seats and an exterior add-on body kit.

You can add optional extras such as pinstripe decals, red brake callipers, silver rear-view mirrors and satin finish alloy rims.

Suzuki Alto

Definitely a car for daddy’s girl, the Alto is adorable in the fortune rose pearl colour (pictured above).

The 1.0-litre GLS is nippy enough to get about town, but parents need not worry about speeding fines – the car can only get up to 145km/h.

Its tiny engine spurts out 50kW of power and 87Nm of torque.

Standard features include two airbags, air conditioning, power steering and driver assist systems such as an anti-lock braking system and electronic brake-force distribution.

Ford Figo

Based on the old Fiesta, the Figo is a fun-filled entry that will whizz young drivers from campus to party in record time.

It’s a Plain Jane type, so it’s relatively safe parked on the street.

It has an average fuel consumption of 6.6 litres/100km and standard items include dual airbags, air conditioner, radio/CD player, power steering and an
anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution.

Its split rear seats can fold down flat for extra luggage when students go home for the holidays.

Peugeot 107

This cheeky little Pug comes with four airbags in its compact body and has an average fuel consumption of only 4.5 litres/100km. It comes with a built-in radio and CD player, electric windows in the front and a funky rev counter instrument.

Boot space is almost non-existent and it won’t win your teen any drag racing matches with its 157km/h top speed, so don’t stress. Best of all, its carbon emissions clock in at 106g/km so you won’t pay any tax under the emission law.
