Ivory Coast veteran Didier Drogba says he is prepared to put the interests of the national team ahead of his own ambitions during this World Cup campaign.

The Ivorians produced a dominant performance during their 2-1 victory against Japan at the weekend. However, Drogba only featured in that performance for the greater part of 30 minutes, but the Galatasary striker is not in the least bit perturbed.

The consensus is that Drogba is being utilised as an impact player during this year’s campaign, which is a role he has embraced.

“I was disappointed (not to start),” Drogba told L’Equipe today.

“But I have to show my respect to those that started. When I went in, I just wanted to help the team to win the match and I did not need this disappointment in order to be motivated,” added Drogba, who has never advanced past the group phase of the World Cup.

“I don’t know how long I played but I knew it was important to give something extra to the team.”
