2013-07-14 06:01

Charl Blignaut selects the top 10 African and international films on the Durban International Film Festival programme.

1. Cosmopolis (Canada)

The inimitable intellectual of the horror genre, David Cronenberg, is back and at his best.

2. Yema (Algeria, France)

Acclaimed and moving story of a woman preparing her son’s body for burial.

3. Free Angela & All Political Prisoners (US, France)

A documentary closes the festival this year, a gripping tale of a communist versus the FBI.

4. Midnight’s Children (Canada, UK)

Deepak Mehta’s version of Salman Rushdie’s “unfilmable” epic magic realist novel.

5. Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer (Russia, UK)

Finally South Africans get to see this doccie on imprisoned Russian feminist protest rockers Pussy Riot.

6. The Battle of Tabatô (Guinea-Bissau, Portugal)

Music, magic and post-colonial angst in Guinea-Bissau by first-time feature director João Viana.

7. Francine (US, Canada)

A quiet, difficult gem. Ex-con Francine finds solace in animals working at a small-town vet clinic.

8. Born This Way (US, Cameroon)

A compelling and important documentary on the gay and lesbian underground in Cameroon.

9. Me and You (Italy)

If you’re a Bernardo Bertolucci fan, his latest explores a brother-sister relationship.

10. It’s Us (Kenya)

Fascinating new feature in which a curious new tribalism makes enemies of old friends.

» The Durban International Film Festival is on from July 18 to 28
