Durban casino hits the sardine jackpot

2010-07-21 19:32

Thousands of sardines swarmed the beach front at Suncoast Casino in Durban today, according to the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board.

“In terms of sardine activity, it’s off the Durban beach front. Netters are busy off Suncoast Casino at the moment with lots of fish around. However, it is quiet along the south coast,” said Mike Anderson-Reade, the head of operations at the Sharks Board.

Anderson-Reade said shark safety gear had been removed on the Durban beach front and bathers should check with lifeguards before swimming in the sea.

Last year, sardines failed to show up in Durban.

On Monday sardines were netted at Umhlanga beach and last week Monday the fish showed up at Margate beach on the south coast.

The sardine run is a popular tourist attraction in KwaZulu-Natal. Communities gather on the beach to fill baskets with the little fish.
