Durban gets MTN 8 final

2010-09-17 14:08

Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium will once again host the final of the MTN 8 Wafa Wafa competition, the organisers announced today.

The final will take place on October 2. Kick-off will be at 8.15pm.

The 2010 World Cup semi-final stadium hosted the first-ever MTN 8 final between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns three seasons ago. Chiefs won on penalties.

Last year’s final went to Soweto’s Orlando Stadium, where Golden Arrows routed Ajax Cape Town 6-0.

After winning the final last year Arrows failed to qualify for this season’s tournament as they finished outside the top-eight bracket.

Next week Chiefs will host Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium to determine who will play the winner between Moroka Swallows and Ajax.

In making the tournament more exciting, the MTN 8 has changed the traditional prize money format by awarding the total pot – a lucrative R8 million, winner-takes-all prize – to the tournament winners.

The other teams walk away with R800 000 irrespective of where they finish.
