Cape Town – About 500 people are currently occupying a plot of land in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, says the Economic Freedom Fighters.

The party said people had already begun erecting structures on the land near Nolungile railway station in site C.

Reports said that EFF MPs Bernard Josephs and Nazier Paulsen led the occupation but the party’s Godrich Gardee told News24 that the EFF merely supports community members in occupying vacant land.

“We don’t say ‘hey, there’s land we want to occupy’,” said Gardee.

“I did just what Jan van Riebeeck did – he invaded the land; I occupied it,” said Paulsen.

And he promised that the party would also target more affluent areas of Cape Town as they continued occupying vacant land.

Paulsen promised that the party would lead communities in taking over land in Bishopscourt, Camps Bay and Rondebosch Common.

Numerous attempts by News24 to get comment from the City of Cape Town’s alderman JP Smith and Western Cape police were unsuccessful.
