The Economic Freedom Fighters has vowed not to obey “unjust” laws and rules.

EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi made the remarks in the National Assembly today while unsuccessfully trying to move a motion without notice that was critical of Speaker Baleka Mbete.

“The EFF rises without notice to move that the house notes that the speaker, honourable Mbete, has declared war against the EFF in how she targets its leaders in this house through unjust rulings,” Ndlozi said.

“No amount of intimidation [or] disciplinary kangaroo courts, will ever remove us from these benches because we are not workers in honourable Baleka Mbete’s plantation.”

Ndlozi was referring to a decision by Parliament’s powers and privileges committee to recommend the suspension of 12 EFF members, and seek a verbal apology from another eight MPs found guilty on contempt of Parliament charges for disrupting President Jacob Zuma’s question time in Parliament on August 21.

Ndlozi was cut short by ANC chief whip Stone Sizani, who objected, leading to the motion being struck down.

The motions came minutes after Mbete ruled that a motion without notice could not be submitted if it offended against the rules of Parliament.

“Motions are procedurally out of order if they contain offensive or unbecoming language,” Mbete ruled.

“This would include motions which cast aspersions on the character of other honourable members, judges, or other office bearers ... or which contravene the rules in any other way.”
