EFF goes to court after eThekwini cancels rally venue

2015-04-25 12:11

The Economic Freedom Fighters will file an urgent application to have construction stopped at the venue where they are set to have their Freedom Day rally on Monday.

The party was informed by the eThekwini Municipality yesterday that it was cancelling their offer – three days before the event – of the John Dube Stadium due to renovations.

Speaking to City Press, EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said finding an alternative venue was not an option as they had put in months of hard work and a lot of money into the event.

The party appears to believe the ANC-run metro is deliberately sabotaging their political rally.

“The EFF printed 2000 posters and 30 000 flyers which have been distributed across the townships of eThekwini. We have also arranged and paid for buses to transport people on the basis that the event is taking place in this stadium.”

The party wrote in a statement that the act to withdraw the venue was “political sabotage” by the ANC to undermine their growth in the KwaZulu-Natal province.

The party is embarking on a campaign in a number of areas in the province.

EFF leader Julius Malema yesterday addressed a large crowd of students at the Durban University of Technology.

Today the party will visit a refugee camp in Isipingo, as well as address people at a number of community meetings to promote the Freedom Day rally.
