Floyd “Money” Mayweather, one of the best boxers in history, will touch down at OR Tambo International Airport this afternoon in a G5 private jet with members of his entourage – or, as they’re known, “The Money Team”. But some who were promised they would get a chance to see him may be disappointed.

City Press can reveal that the pound-for-pound king might no longer visit Bloemfontein and East London but only Joburg and Cape Town.

This was confirmed by department of sports and recreation spokesperson Paena Galane, who said that the arrangements may again change when they are announced at a press conference that is scheduled to take place at Olympic House in Joburg tonight.

An insider close to the facilitation process said if Mayweather does not make a stop in East London, it would be “a huge embarrassment to organisers for this great athlete not to visit the country’s boxing mecca”.

Galane said that the department was not paying a cent for the tour. The identity of the people who are bringing Mayweather to South Africa would only be revealed tonight.

The insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Mayweather’s tour was a business trip to explore the possibility of staging a fight in South Africa.

The department of sport, headed by Fikile Mbalula, said last year that it had invited Mayweather for the annual National Sports Awards, but the undefeated warrior did not pitch.

The highest paid athlete in 2012, pocketing $85 million, is due to conduct a boxing clinic at Dube Boxing Club in Soweto tomorrow before attending a black-tie dinner on Friday night at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Joburg.

He will make his last stop at Robben Island on Saturday before leaving for the US on the same day.
