Eat, dance, Cele tells cops

2010-01-29 12:18

National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele urged thousands of police

officers at a Police Day celebration in Bloemfontein on Friday to “eat, dance

and walk together”.

“This day belongs to you, there is nothing wrong with it. Let’s

dance together and eat together,” Cele told the cheering crowd at Vodacom

Park.

South Africans slept peacefully in their homes over the December

period “because of you”.

“Somebody please tell me why I cannot say thank you to you?” Cele

asked, responding to criticism that the day was a waste of time and money. His

statement was met with an explosion of cheers.

The commissioner told the gathering that from this day on they

would “rise and walk” to tell thugs and criminal in South Africa there was no

place for them.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa was expected to speak later.
