Education dept condemns assault on teacher by pupil

2013-09-20 08:25

The Gauteng education department has condemned the assault of a teacher by a Grade Eight pupil at Glenvista High School in Johannesburg south.

“The head of department has already dispatched a team of senior officials to the school to ensure that immediate action is taken to suspend the learner, provide counselling to the educator and begin disciplinary process,” said spokesman Gershwin Chuenyane yesterday.

A video of the assault – which happened on Wednesday – was captured by a fellow pupil and went viral on yesterday.

It shows the pupil unsuccessfully trying to retrieve what looks like a school bag from the teacher.

After failing to get it back, he hits and kicks the teacher, then throws a chair and a broom as the teacher walks out of the classroom.

His classmates can be heard off-camera, encouraging the youth to “get him”.

The department commended the teacher for remaining calm and not retaliating.
