Eight arrested for induna’s murder

2011-10-10 08:57

Six more people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a induna (headman) in Folweni, bringing the number of arrests to eight.

The first two, believed to be the killers, were arrested in the KwaMakutha area, south of Durban about an hour after the 7am murder yesterday, according to Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

Walter Makhanya was shot several times in the head and chest in his home.

Mdunge said police believed the two were professional hitmen who could be linked to 20 other murders in the province. The other six arrested were believed to have set up the murder.

“This was a well-planned murder,” he said.

Makhanya was an overseer for the local king in Folweni.

“Some of the Folweni community were not happy about this because the man was of different blood,” said Mdunge.

Three firearms and three stolen vehicles were recovered during the arrests. One of the firearms was being linked to a 2001 robbery.

All eight were expected to appear in the Folweni Magistrates Court soon on charges of murder and conspiracy to murder.
