Carien du Plessis’ pick of memorable moments in the run-up to and during this week’s elections.

1. The rise of the Red Berets, the Economic Freedom Fighters, which came from nowhere to score more than a million votes (or 6.35% of the total).

2. The African Independent Congress, which rose from Matatiele to get three seats in the National Assembly, and which insisted this wasn’t because people mistook it for the ANC.

3. The drastic decline of the Congress of the People, from more than 1.3 million votes in 2009 to a mere 0.7% of the vote (123 235 votes).


4. ANC packing the 90 000-seater FNB stadium for its Siyanqoba rally, even though President Jacob Zuma’s speech was forgettable.

5. Independent Electoral Commission chairperson Pansy Tlakula’s insistence that she would not step down despite adverse findings by the Public Protector.

6. DA spokesperson Mmusi Maimane’s Ayisafani advert, which was banned by the SABC and parodied in many ways.


7. Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula’s razzmatazzing on Twitter, which had many people muttering things about drinking and tweeting.

8. DA leader Helen Zille’s Twitter meltdown.

9. The 20 years of democracy celebrations.

10. Nkandla, but it bothered only the clever people.
