Electricity usage on the up

THE volume of electricity consumed has risen, according to

Statistics SA today.


The actual estimated volume of electricity consumed during the

fourth quarter of last year increased by 3% compared with the corresponding

quarter of 2008.


According to the Pretoria-based agency, electricity consumption

after seasonal adjustment during the fourth quarter of last year increased by 1%

compared with the third quarter of last year.


However, the actual estimated consumption of electricity for the

whole of last year decreased by 2,7% compared with the year 2008, Statistics SA

said.


The actual estimated production of electricity during the fourth

quarter of last year increased by 1,3% compared with the fourth quarter of

2008.


Last December’s estimates showed a year-on-year increase of

7,2%.


However, the estimated seasonally adjusted production of

electricity for the fourth quarter of last year decreased marginally compared

with the third quarter of last year.


The actual estimated production of electricity for last year

decreased by 3,4% compared with 2008, Statistics SA said.


Electricity distributed to the provinces for last year was 2,3%

lower compared with 2008.


Lower figures were reported for eight provinces during last year

ranging from -6,2% for Mpumalanga to -0,8% for Gauteng.


KwaZulu-Natal was the only province with an increase last year

(2%).


Statistics SA said the volume of electricity purchased from outside

South Africa’s borders increased from 10 572 gigawatt-hours in 2008 to 12 295

gigawatt-hours last year, representing an increase of 16,3%.


The volume of electricity sold to neighbouring countries during

last year decreased by 0,8% compared with 2008.


his resulted in a net outflow of electricity of 1 757

gigawatt-hours last year, as compared with a net outflow of 3 596 gigawatt-hours

in 2008.
