Ellis Park stampede victims ‘forgotten’

2011-04-11 09:03

Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula expressed dismay at the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) decision not to commemorate the anniversary of a stampede that left 43 dead at Ellis Park Stadium on April 11, The Star reported today.

The stampede occurred during a league match between Soweto’s arch-rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, and prompted calls for improved access and exit points, as well as security, at sport venues.

“That event was a complete disaster due to security breakdown at the stadium and such an anarchy must never ever happen again,” Mbalula said.

“I am taken aback because the PSL should have organised something to commemorate the tragedy. It’s something we need to reconsider,” he said.

Mbalula, however, was pleased with the way teams had taken the issue of crowd control seriously since the tragedy.
