Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has reportedly not put his name forward for the ANC’s list of candidates in this year’s elections and does not intend to serve in the new government after the elections.

Beeld reported today that this would pave the way for ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa to become the country’s deputy president.

Ramaphosa was recently appointed as a special envoy to President Jacob Zuma to mediate in the South Sudan conflict and to assist with reconciliation and nation-building in Sri Lanka.

ANC sources told Beeld this move was intended to introduce Ramaphosa to the international community before his appointment as deputy president.

Meanwhile, rumours are circulating that former labour minister and former Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni could make a comeback to politics after he resigned from his position of chairperson of AngloGold Ashanti on Monday.

But Mboweni told Business Day he had resigned because he wanted to take care of his expanding portfolio of investments and responsibilities.

Beeld also reported that ANC veteran Ben Turok would not be returning to Parliament after the elections for health reasons and because he wanted to spend more time on the publication that he edits, New Agenda.
