One of eight men who escaped from police holding cells in eSikhawini was shot and killed when he attacked officers after being found, KwaZulu-Natal police said today.

“We caught a man at 2am this morning in Eshowe and he produced a firearm. He shot at officers and they retaliated,
fatally wounding him,” Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said. “We found four others too.”

Eight men awaiting trial at the eSikhawini Police Station overpowered police officers on Wednesday evening. They fled with three of their guns.

One of the eight was arrested on Friday in eSikhawini.

Another three were arrested on Sunday in Cato Manor.

Two of the officers’ guns were recovered, as well as an unlicensed gun.

They were being held for various cases including murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, rape and possession of suspected stolen property. Additional charges of escaping from lawful custody and robbery were added.

“Three men are still on the loose,” Mdunge said.

The four would appear in eSikhawini Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
