Eskom may announce new head this month

Electricity parastatal Eskom may announce the appointment of its

new chief executive this month.

“I know I said last year that a new CEO would be appointed within

90 days, but it has taken longer than anticipated,” acting chairperson Mpho

Makwana told the parastatal’s results presentation in Johannesburg today.

The board had made a formal recommendation for a candidate on May

28, he said.

“The next phase is shareholder (government) approval.”

Last year Eskom’s board fired former chief executive Jacob Maroga

following his denial that he had offered to resign from the electricity

utility.

The appointment of a chief executive officer had dragged out as

Eskom had to wait for a ruling by the High Court in Johannesburg that Maroga

could not stop the board from appointing a successor.

Maroga wanted to be reinstated to his former position, but the

judge found that although his termination was illegal, he could not re-join

Eskom as his relationship with its board had broken down “irretrievably”.

Asked for an update on Eskom’s relationship with Maroga, Makwana

said the former CEO’s case would go to court on June 7 when Maroga’s main

application against Eskom for unlawful dismissal would be heard.

“Nothing is happening other than that,” Makwana said.
