Eskom workers hand over memorandum

2010-05-26 13:37

Eskom workers delivered a memorandum of demands to their management

at Megawatt Park in Johannesburg after a court interdict prevented them from

striking.

National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) spokesperson Shane Chosane

said: “They handed over the memorandum to Eskom and now they will be reporting

to work as soon as possible.”

Eskom human resources manager Bhabhalazi Bulunga accepted the

memorandum.

Chosane said: “In the memorandum, workers are asking that all

issues be resolved, of which the critical one is the housing allowance.”

The union would now look at “further engagement” to resolve

outstanding matters, he added.

Chosane said weekend talks with Eskom had produced some

results.

Matters discussed in an attempt to avert a strike included the

rights of shop stewards and health and safety regulations.

Choshane said agreements were reached on these issues.

The only outstanding matter was a housing allowance for

workers.

“They want a R5 000 housing allowance added to their

benefits.”

Further talks with Eskom were scheduled to take place today and

tomorrow. These would include salary talks for 2010.

Eskom was granted an eleventh-hour court interdict last night

preventing the NUM workers from going on a national strike.
