Eyewitnesses describe defacing of Zuma ‘Spear’

2012-05-22 11:04

Two eyewitnesses have described the defacing of satirical artist Brett Murray’s painting of President Jacob Zuma as having been planned.

Kaya FM head of talk Lance Claasen said the two men operated in unison.

Claasen said a middle-aged man started the vandalism while his younger accomplice continued.

They were both arrested by security guards and later taken to the Rosebank police station.

Claasen said the two men entered the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg around the same time as he did.

Journalist Iman Rapetti, who also witnessed the incident, said gallery staff knew one of the man, who visited yesterday and identified himself as an Afrikaner journalist.

“It looks like they planned the defacing,” Rapetti said.

She said the men were not searched and the older painted an “X” over Zuma’s genitals.

The younger painted over the 1.85-metre art piece.
