Safa polls should be about the future of the organisation, not the presidential candidates, writes Timothy Molobi.

In the one corner we have those who want transformation in football: the Football Transformation Forum (FTF).

In the other corner we have those who want to save football: Save our Soccer (SOS).

This can mean only one thing – the SA Football Association (Safa) elections have come around.

Safa’s two presidential candidates, Danny Jordaan and Mandla Mazibuko, have both promised to change the association.

Safa’s annual general meeting on Saturday will see a new president being elected after the incumbent, Kirsten Nematandani, failed to garner a single nomination.

Both Jordaan and Mazibuko – who has also been nominated for the position of vice-president – say they are ready to arrest the declining standard of football in the country.

The FTF, which has put Jordaan’s name forward, says it has no doubt he is the right man to transform Safa into a world-class organisation.

“We have complete confidence in his ability to take Safa forward into a new future, building on the success that was achieved under his leadership in hosting the most successful Fifa World Cup ever,” reads their statement.

In a concise statement, Mazibuko’s SOS says: “We are not interested in changing the jockey but in buying a new horse with the vigour and strength to take (Safa) to a desirable destination.

“We acknowledge that the association has been infested with a number of problems in the past, but believe most of them could have been averted had the interests of the association been prioritised above?...?narrow interests.”
