‘Fake cop’ on the run in Limpopo

2015-02-18 09:04

Limpopo police are looking for an escaped prisoner – who was, until a week ago, one of their own and who’s been exposed as an alleged serial impersonator.

Police sources have confirmed to City Press that the man arrived at the Polokwane Police Station in 2012, claiming he had been sent from national headquarters to join them.

He got to work, apparently without being vetted or his sudden arrival being checked.

The 39-year-old, whose real name and alias are known to City Press, later moved to the Seshego police station and was arrested while on duty a week ago.

He spent two nights in his own station’s police cells – and then escaped before he could appear in court. He has been on the run since.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto was tight-lipped about the details of his arrest, saying only: “All I know is that cases of impersonating the police as well as escape from detention have been opened.”

She would not confirm the man’s names, nor provide a mug shot.

Sources at the Seshego station said the officer had access to firearms and drove marked vehicles.

One told City Press the man was allegedly a convicted rapist who had escaped from custody in Pretoria, moved to Polokwane, changed his name and got to work as a policeman.

“Eyebrows were raised from other colleagues through his conduct here and there but he was described as a hard worker and doubts raised were dismissed as being influenced by jealousy,” one source told City Press.

“Yes, he could quickly go out and arrest wanted suspects but at the same time his detective colleagues complained that they were losing all cases he was involved in.”

It has not yet been established whether the suspect drew any salary from the police service.
