False start for Van Gaal

2014-08-16 23:28

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal suffered a defeat in his first competitive match in charge as Swansea City snatched a 2-1 victory in a closely contested clash at Old Trafford today.

Following a disappointing 2013/14 campaign under the guidance of former Red Devils boss David Moyes, many were expecting a much improved performance from Wayne Rooney and company in the season’s curtain-raiser.

However, it was an afternoon to forget for the Old Trafford faithful as the Swans defied the odds to claim all three points.

Midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng fired the Welsh side into the lead on 28 minutes before Rooney restored parity in the 53rd minute with an overhead kick from close range.

It was Gylfi Sigurdsson who had the last say, though, slotting home from the centre of the area after a counterattack.

The match started at a frantic tempo as both sides looked to make an early breakthrough although there was very little in the way of goalmouth action in the opening 10 minutes.

Ki put the Swans in front after the South Korean international latched onto a ball from Nathan Dyer before drilling a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box.

However, the hosts eventually equalised on 53 minutes as an unmarked Rooney hooked the ball home with a bicycle kick after being teed up by Phil Jones’ flicked header.

But Swansea didn’t buckle under the pressure and reclaimed the lead in the 72nd minute.

Today's Barclays Premier League results:

Manchester United 1, Swansea 2

Arsenal 2, Crystal Palace 1

Leicester City 2, Everton 2

Stoke City 0, Aston Villa 1

West Brom 2, Sunderland 2
