Fana Hlongwane to testify at arms inquiry

2014-12-11 06:56

Fana Hlongwane, who served as an arms consultant and adviser to late defence minister Joe Modise, is expected to testify before the Seriti Commission of Inquiry today.

Hlongwane was scheduled to give evidence last month at the inquiry’s public hearings in Pretoria.

Francois van Zyl SC, for Hlongwane, told the inquiry at the time that the legal team was not ready to proceed.

His legal representatives requested a list of the documents the commission intended on using, so it could peruse them.

An arrangement had been made between the inquiry’s evidence leaders and his lawyers.

The commission is holding public hearings into alleged corruption in the multibillion-rand arms procurement deal in 1999.

At the time, the government acquired, among other hardware, 26 Gripen fighter aircraft and 24 Hawk lead-in fighter trainer aircraft for the air force, and frigates and submarines for the navy.

The commission – with Judge Willie Seriti at its helm – was appointed by President Jacob Zuma three years ago.

Zuma recently extended the terms of the commission until April 30 2015 – after which it will be expected to issue a report within a six-month deadline.
