Fans brace for a knockout battle

2014-09-07 15:00

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr and Marcos “El Chino” Maidana last met inside the ring in May, when the American beat the Argentinian by a disputed majority decision to retain the title.

That fight brought with it divergent opinions from both sides, opinions that are still being debated with much emotion. Some pundits thought Mayweather Jr won convincingly to unify his WBA super welterweight and WBC welterweight titles, but critics thought Maidana fought gallantly and was handed a raw deal.

Next Sunday morning, both pugilists will enter the ring to do it again.

The bout bears all the hallmarks of being a thriller, and both fighters have promised to throw leather nonstop and win with a knockout.

Maidana is determined not to let his foe have a free ride – compared with last time.

“I’m going to have to go for the knockout this time. I have no choice. I was robbed the last time we met, and I’m going to win convincingly this time around,” Maidana was quoted as saying.

But an enthusiastic Mayweather Jr has been talking up his abilities on social-media networks.

“I’m good, and I’m going to knock him out,” he said.

As is customary for the man nicknamed “Money”, he is guaranteed a big payday. He earned $32?million (R343?million) for the previous fight, and “El Chino” got at least $1.5?million in purse money.

All in all, boxing fans are in for a treat.
