Feisty Congo have not lost the war

The Republic of Congo are talking up their chances in Group C in the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan).

The feisty Red Devils lost 1-0 to Ghana in their group opener yesterday – but coach Sébastien Migné was convinced that his young charges had a chance to fight for a spot in the competition knockout stages.

The tournament minnows face Ethiopia – who will enter the fray needing victory to keep their quarterfinal chances alive – at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Friday.

“The boys showed what was expected from them against Ghana, even though we missed some opportunities,” Migné said.

“We have two games left to play in the group and need to correct our mistakes and keep the same fighting spirit for Ethiopia.”

Congolese captain Andzouana Andzouana said: “We haven’t lost the war. Everybody felt that Ghana were the favourites, but we put a lot of pressure on them and could have won the match if we took our chances.”

However, the Ghanaians were also not convincing in their win and need to tighten some screws in their machinery ahead of their meeting with group leaders, Libya, also on Friday.

The Libyans showed their class when they beat Ethiopia 2-0 in the first group game yesterday. Ghana will be punished if they are not at their optimum level against a Libya team determined to make the next stages of the competition.

“The win against Congo was not bad, but it wasn’t a good one either,” said Ghana coach Maxwell Konadu. “I believe we will need to work on our mentality because the boys broke down too easily.”
