Fifth Aurora suspect granted bail

2011-01-07 11:20

The fifth suspect arrested in connection with the killing of alleged illegal miners in Aurora Grootvlei near Springs was granted bail in the Benoni Magistrates Court today, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

“The accused, Micky Tulani Mazenen, appeared alone and was joined to the other four as an additional accused,” NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said.

“He was granted R2 000 bail and will appear with the others on January 27.”

In August last year four men were killed and several others wounded, allegedly by security guards, at the underground shaft of Aurora’s Grootvlei mine on the East Rand.

Mazenen, who was arrested yesterday, would be charged with murder alongside former Big Brother celebrity Brad Wood and three others.

Wood was head of the security company that was used at the mine owned by President Jacob Zuma’s nephew, Khulubuse Zuma, and former president Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Zondwa Mandela.

In October Wood was appointed security manager at Aurora’s Orkney and Springs operations.

The NPA commended the police for ensuring that all the suspects were arrested ahead of their court date.
