Fikile Mbalula evacuated as North West rally turns violent

2014-04-28 08:44

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula was evacuated from an election rally at Freedom Park near Rustenburg in the North West when Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) members turned to violence.

Mbalula was yesterday taken away in a bulletproof vehicle when Amcu members threw stones at cars, the SABC reported.

Mbalula had been conducting a door-to-door campaign in the area.

Members of Amcu at Lonmin, Impala Platinum and Anglo American Platinum have been on strike for the past three months, demanding a monthly salary of R12 500 for entry-level workers. On Thursday, Amcu rejected the latest offer from the platinum producers.

According to the report, Mbalula said afterwards that the ANC would not be intimidated through lawlessness.
