  • GOVERNMENT clinics and hospitals

provide free HIV tests and treatment.

  • Many non-governmental organisations

provide free or subsidised tests and treatment, such as www.zuzimpilo.co.za, a

very efficient private clinic in downtown Johannesburg where tests cost about

    R65 and standard treatment R400 a month. Call 0860-IMPILO (0860?467456)

  • All private doctors and laboratories

can do a test for about R100, excluding the doctor’s consultation fee. Check if

you medical aid has an HIV-management plan and use the benefits proactively to

manage your health, before treatment becomes necessary.

  • To find the best, closest option for

testing and treatment, call the HIV Clinicians Society at 011?341?0162 or email

    sahivsoc@sahivsoc.org. 0860?448?911 will also provide a wide-ranging list of

    facilities.

  • The standard rapid HIV test takes

about 20 minutes – most places will do two tests to confirm the result. Pre- and

post test counselling is crucial. Trained counsellors will help to process the

result and what it means – whether it’s positive or negative.

  • An HIV-positive result will be

followed up with another test to determine how far the infection has progressed.

Then the counsellor and doctor will work with the patient to work out an

    HIV-management strategy.

  • The sooner you are tested the greater

the chance that treatment will work well. Antiretroviral (ARVs) medication will

become necessary later as HIV progresses. ARVs are miracle drugs that improve

quality of life and prolong life.

  • Before ARVs become necessary there is a lot that can be done to

manage HIV and stay healthy for as long as possible.

  • It’s only human to feel shock at an

HIV-positive result. If you aren’t ready to talk about it to loved ones, call

Lifeline at 0861 322 322 where trained counsellors can help you move forward.
