Elegantly attired in a black-and-white Thula Sindi creation, Simphiwe Dana – who describes herself as “fiery yet free” – held an intimate listening session hosted by Kaya FM’s Nonn Botha on Thursday night.

She performed for a small studio audience at Kaya House in Joburg and sang two tracks from her forthcoming album, Firebrand. She then took questions from the audience.

Dana lived up to the name of her album, outspoken as always on a range of issues.

She drew parallels between Brett Bailey’s controversial The Spear painting and Saartjie Baartman as examples of how the black body is given an “animals in a zoo” narrative.

Among those on hand to share the experience were Power FM’s Pabi Moloi, Sindi – who’s more of a friend than a fashion designer to Dana – actor and director Tony Kgoroge and choreographer Gregory Maqoma.

It has been a good year for Dana. She performed recently at New York’s Apollo Theater and picked up a Bessie Award for her work.

She told the audience she feels “happier and freer” now, and doesn’t feel like she has to prove anything to anyone at this stage of her life.

After the show, she tweeted a thank you to her “fellow firebrands”
