First time success for Philippi United

2012-04-09 19:02

Philippi United won the Metropolitan Under-19 Premier Cup in the club’s first appearance at the traditional Easter junior competition.

United beat Orlando Pirates today thanks to a late extra-time goal.

The Philippi township-based United were voted Team of the Tournament out of 32 participating clubs.

Their coach, Masixole Mathwane, was named best mentor.

Komesho Academy from Namibia won the event last year.

United’s success marked another milestone for businessman Chippa Mpengezi, the owner of the mother club to which the academy belongs – National First Division club Chippa United.

Despite the chilly weather an estimated 7 000 spectators attended the final at the Mother City’s Erica Park grounds.

These included Safa vice-president Mandla “Shoes” Mazibuko, PSL chief executive Stan Matthews and player agents such as Mike Makaab.
