Five arrested for Vryheid murders

2011-11-10 09:10

Five people were arrested yesterday in connection with the robbery of two supermarket owners in Vryheid, said police.

One of the them had been linked to the subsequent murders of Shahed Ulha (32) and Ally Shohel (26), said Colonel Jay Naicker. Detectives were still searching for his accomplice, he said.

Ulha and Shohel were found dead in their supermarket at Section C, Mondlo, in Vryheid on Tuesday.

“Police discovered that entry had been gained through the roof of the store and the two foreigners were allegedly hacked to death,” said Naicker.

“They had sustained severe injuries to their heads and it was immediately apparent that robbery was not the motive for the killing as nothing was taken.”

Naicker said the businessmen were robbed on October 17.

“It is believed that the deceased may have been silenced due to the probability of them being able to identify the men who allegedly robbed them,” he said.

Detectives arrested two of the men in Mpumulanga and two in Mondlo. The fifth man was arrested as he was boarding a taxi in Vryheid.
