Five injured in mine

Five mineworkers were seriously injured in an earth tremor at DRDGold’s Blyvooruitzicht mine in Carletonville, North West, today, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said.

Several others were taken to hospital with minor injuries, NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said.

“There were earth tremors which after several minutes caused a rockfall,” said Seshoka.

The miners suffered various injuries. Some fell, some were hit by falling rocks, others sustained lacerations.

“No fatalities have been reported yet,” said Seshoka.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said seven were injured.

“We airlifted one man to Milpark hospital [in Joburg] with multiple injuries.”

He was in a critical but stable condition. “Three others were treated on scene and the other three were taken to another hospital,” said Vermaak.

The union had sent a safety team to the mine.
